A.                Explanation
Explanation text is a text genre which tries to explain how a thing happens or why the thing is made. Explanation text actually is similar to procedure text, however, explanation text tends to explain. While the procedure text is intended to instruct how to form or make something.
Bellow are some examples of explanation text which are grouped into several topics. This list of links relating to explanation text hopefully helps students to get more understanding about text genres, especially an explanation text.

Ø  Explanation texts about food
How a chocolate is made
Ø  Explanation texts about toy play
How a kite flies
Ø  Explanation texts about natural phenomena:
How a tsunami happens
How a Venus eclipse happens
How an earthquake happens
How rain happens
How seasons happen
How day and night happens
Why daylight in summer is longer than in winter
Ø  Explanation texts about technology
How a cell phone works
How a fuel light works
Ø  Explanation texts about monumental things
How roman roads were built
Why Eiffel tower was built
Ø  Explanation texts about diseases
How a cancer is formed

Ø  One of Example Explanation Text
How Earthquakes Happen
Earthquake is one of the most destroying natural disasters. Unluckily it often happens in several regions. Recently a horrible earthquake has shaken West Sumatra. It has brought great damages. Why did it occur? Do you know how an earthquake happens?
Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves. It make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. They don't just slide smoothly. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving. After a while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that's built up. When the rocks break, the earthquake occurs.
During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they continue to move until they get stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks is called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the focus is called the epicenter of the earthquake.

Social  Function
Generic Structure
Significant Lexicgramatical Features
To explain the processes involed in the formation or working of natural or sociocultural phenomena
Ø  A general statement to position the reader
Ø  A sequenced explanation or why or how something occurs
Ø  Focus on generic, non-human Participants.
Ø  Use mainly of material and relational processes
Ø  Use mainly of temporal and causal circumstances and conjunctions
Ø  Some use passive voice to get theme right.
To describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of action or steps
Ø  Goal
Ø  Materials (not required for all procedural texts)
Ø  Steps 1-n (i.e., goal followed by a series of steps oriented to achieving the goal)
Ø  Focus on generalized human agents.
Ø  Use of simple present tense, often imprerative
Ø  Use mainly of temporal conjunctions (or numbering to indicate sequence)
Ø  Use manly of material processes.
