Berdasarkan fungsinya, clause tebagi menjadi tiga, yaitu noun clause, adjective clause, and adverbial
clause.
a.
Noun
Clause
Noun clause memiliki fungsi sebagai noun (kata benda). Fungsi noun clause dalam kalimat sebagai
berikut:
1. Noun
Clause sebagai subject
Contoh:
v What
I’m listening to is a nice song.
v What
she has just said shocked us.
v What
he’s doing right now is dangerous.
2. Noun
Clause sebagai Object
Contoh:
v I
don’t understand what she’s talking about.
v I
don’t know where she lives.
v I
don’t understand what they’re discussing about.
3. Adjective
Clause sebagai Pernyataan
Contoh:
v She
said that her brother will leave this town.
v He
believes that his boss will give a big reward for him.
v My
teacher said that we will have a mid term test next week.

Adjective
Clause
Adjective Clause memiliki fungsi yang
sama dengan adjective (kata sifat),
yaitu menerangkan kata benda yang dilekatinya. Adjective clause ditandai dengan which, that, atau who.
Contoh:
v The
film that she wathed yesterday was a horror movie.
v The
homework that I did was difficult.
v The
old man that you help is my neighbor.

Adverbial
Clause
Adverbial clause memiliki fungsi sama
dengan adverb. Adverbial clause terbagi menjadi beberapa bagian, yaitu adverb clause of place, adverb clause of
time, adverb clause of condition, adverb clause of manner, adverb clause of
contrast, adverb clause of cause and effect, adverb clause of purpose and
result.

Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah where,
nowhere, wherever, serta anywhere.
Contoh:
v This
is the store where I bought my white shoes.
2.
Adverb
Clause of Time
Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah as, as
long as, after, before, everything, ever since, by the time, since, while,
when, whenever, until, once, dan lain-lain.
Contoh:
v Whenever
I visit her house, she cooks a delicious fried rice for me.
3.
Adverb
Clause of Condition
Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah if only,
only if, event if, in case, unless, on condition that, dan lain-lain.
Contoh:
v I
will go to the cinema with you only if I finish my homework.
4.
Adverb
Clause of Manner
Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah, as if,
as though, as, how, like.
Contoh:
v She
is good in mathematics like her brother.
v He
loves fising as his father.
5.
Adverb
Clause of Contrast
Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah through,
although, even if, in spite of, whereas, eventhough, despite, dan
lain-lain.
Contoh:
v Although
he has much money, he does not feel happy.
6.
Adverb
Clause of Cause and Effect
Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah because,
due to, because of, since so ... that ..., therefore, dan lain-lain.
Contoh:
v Due
to the bad weather, the aircraft could not arrive on time.
7.
Adverb
Clause of Purpose and Result
Kata
penghubung yang digunakan adalah in case,
so, in order to, so that, that, for the purpose, dan lain-lain.
Contoh:
v In
order toreach her dream, she has to
study hard.
RINGKASAN:
Ø Terdapat
tiga jenis klausa, yaitu noun clause,
adjective clause, dan adverbial
clause.
Ø Noun Clause memiliki fungsi seperti noun (kata benda).
Ø Adjective Clause memiliki fungsi seperti
adjective (kata sifat).
Ø Adcerbial Clause memiliki fungsi seperti
adverb (kata keterangan).
Ø Adverbial clause terbagi menjadi
beberapa bagian, yaitu adverb clause of
